Date: Wednesday 10th December 2025 - Venue: Southern GP Federation Support Unit 1, Derryboy Rd, Carnbane Business Park, Newry, BT35 6QH

Whilst the course is open to all Health Care Professionals who have completed an accredited spirometry course with any provider, it is limited to a maximum of 22 students, and the majority of these places are commissioned for Practice Nurses based in the Armagh/Dungannon federation ONLY - places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.

The course commences at 9.30am and will finish approximately 4.30pm.

As this is a face to face teaching day a 'finger lunch' will be provided

About this course

This is a one-day facilitated, interactive session suitable for all registered healthcare professionals who have completed their accredited spirometry course via any provider and are due to complete their three-yearly revalidation.

You will be required to accurately report on 2 unseen readings that will be provided by the trainers, in order for you to gain your recrediation.

There will be an opportunity for those who are unable to attend face to face to join via a google classroom online link.

The training will be delivered by accredited, experienced and competent spirometry trainers.

The day will cover:

  1. Revision
    • On the care and Maintenance of the equipment
    • Gaining good reproducible readings EVERY TIME - using the four-point rule:
      • Demographics
      • Reproducibility
      • Technical Acceptability
      • Actual interpretation of the readings
  2. Update on cross- infection regulations
  3. How to achieve an accurate diagnosis
  4. Looking beyond the FEV1 for additional clues:
    • Maximum Mid-Expiratory Flows (MMEFs)
    • Lower Limit of Normal (LLN)
    • Upper Limit of Normal (ULN)
    • Z-Scores
    • GLI
    • Forced Expiratory Time (FET)
  5. Accurately interpret complex spirometry readings in conjunction with complex patient presentations - group work
  6. Looking at some respiratory complex cases

Students are encouraged to send though their own challenging readings and cases in advance of the training day to be critiqued and analysed on the day to help with peer learning.
